New Sport

Have you ever wanted to run a 5k, climb a mountain, or twist your body into the perfect lotus, but aren’t sure where to start?  Here are some places that can help you get started on achieving your goals:

Team in Training

Team in Training is a wonderful organization that trains people to participate in endurance sporting events like marathons and triathlons while raising money to fight blood cancers for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  They provide the coaching, access to limited events, and training to help you cross the finish line.

Running Evolution

Running Evolution is a women’s running program that trains women to compete in running events like half marathons and full marathons, while providing camaraderie and training partners in a safe and supportive environment.

Couch to 5k Programs

There many “Couch to 5k” programs that train people who are new to running how to run safely and effectively so they can achieve their goals.  They generally pick a specific 5k so that you not only have people of similar ability to train with, but also have people to race with.

PRO Club Triathlon Team

The Seattle area has several triathlon clubs that provide off season training to help you build the skills and stamina to participate in multisport events.  They teach newcomers how to manage the logistics of participating in several sports on the same day and enable you to train with other people with similar experience levels.

Swimming

Swimming is great exercise, but can be daunting for adults who haven’t swum much.  Say Yes To Life helps prepare people for open water swimming by providing supportive and safe group swims in a variety of locations around Seattle.  They are also available for private lessons.  We especially like the Wednesday Evening Stress Release swims!

Yoga

Most yoga studios have “beginner” programs so that you can learn the basic yoga poses in a less intimidating environment with other beginners.  We like the beginner’s class at Be Luminous.

Rowing

Rowing is competitive and fun team sport, but it’s not for the faint of heart. You can sign up to learn to row with the Lake Union Crew or Lake Washington Rowing Club.

You can also find out about beginning groups at sports equipment stores like REI and running stores.  Many of them have their own programs and, if they don’t, they can direct you places where you can learn a new sport.  You can also check out MeetUp – www.meetup.com where you can find beginning groups in a variety of different categories.
