Undertow, also known as rip current, is the invisible current under the surface of the water that retreats back toward the ocean after a wave. These can catch a beach-goer off guard and be extremely strong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To combat this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure children are wearing properly fitting life vests <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know your limits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only swim at approved beaches.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an undertow is (or could be) present, don\u2019t go into the water any deeper than your ankles! \u00a0You can get pulled in and carried away before you know it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecology.wa.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington State Department of Ecology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the following are signs of an undertow:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murky brown water, due to stirred up sand or increased depth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waves breaking further out on both sides of a rip<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debris floating out to sea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foamy or choppy surface<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWater in a rip current flows seaward at about 3 to 6 feet per second &#8212; faster than most people can swim.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are caught in an undertow, do the following: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t panic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swim parallel to shore until you are out of the current.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can&#8217;t break out, tread water and float. Call or wave for help.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Rip currents often occur in these areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>CREATURES <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep an eye out underfoot for those barnacles, shells and other sharp objects that might rip open your skin. \u00a0Jellyfish stings can be very painful and, in some parts of the world, they can be deadly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>HYPOTHERMIA<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waters in the Pacific Northwest tend to be cold, regardless of the time of year and hypothermia can be a threat, even on a hot day. \u00a0According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hypothermia\/basics\/symptoms\/con-20020453\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, signs and symptoms of mild hypothermia include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shivering<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faster breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble speaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slight confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of coordination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":2719,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[2,308],"tags":[402,400,401,392],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2490"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2490"}],"version-history":[{"count":12,"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2490\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3123,"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2490\/revisions\/3123"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/2719"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2490"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2490"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nelsonboydlaw.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2490"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
