Every summer, we read heartbreaking stories about people who die while swimming. Don\u2019t let this happen to you or your loved ones. Here are some important swimming safety tips:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Whenever possible swim in\u00a0designated areas supervised by lifeguards<\/li>\n
  2. NEVER swim alone!<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Never leave a young child unattended near\u00a0water\u00a0and do not<\/strong> trust a child\u2019s life to another child; teach children to always<\/em><\/strong> ask permission to go near water<\/li>\n
  4. The American Red Cross reminds us to have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets<\/a> around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.<\/li>\n
  5. Never swim if the conditions are bad (too dark, water too rough, strong current)<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Watch out for distances – they look so much shorter on the water. \u00a0What looks like a short swim might actually be a long one. \u00a0Don\u2019t swim further than you are able.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Watch out for currents – rivers are especially dangerous and you should be very cautious about swimming in them<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Don\u2019t swim where people are boating<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Use a swim body flotation device too so people can see you!<\/li>\n
  10. NEVER dive into water if you can\u2019t see the bottom or don\u2019t know how deep it is<\/span><\/li>\n
  11. Never swim if you\u2019ve been drinking – it lessens your abilities and judgment<\/span><\/li>\n
  12. If you aren\u2019t a strong swimmer, take some lessons at your local YMCA or visit the American Red Cross<\/a>\u00a0website to find swim lessons near you !<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
