Legal Tip of the Week: Understanding Insurance Reimbursements Deborah Nelson+ February 11, 2015

You are injured in a car wreck that was caused by someone else.  Fortunately, you have Personal Injury Protection (“PIP”) insurance on your own automobile policy.  What are the conditions for PIP paying your medical bills?

(a) Your treatment must be necessary to address injuries you suffered in the wreck;
(b) You must receive the medical treatment within 3 years of the date of the wreck;
(c) Your medical treatment must be performed by someone who is a licensed medical provider;
(d) The cost of your treatment must be reasonable.
(e) All of the above.

Correct Answer:  E

Your PIP insurance will cover medical bills that are caused by a covered incident so that you can receive the medical treatment you need to treat your injuries.  It applies even if no one is at fault for what happened, such as if you hit a deer.  If you don’t have PIP insurance, you will have to wait until you settle your case against the person who hit you in order to get reimbursed for that medical treatment.  PIP is even better than health insurance because there is no deductible and you can choose your healthcare provider.  It will even cover treatments such as massage therapy, acupuncture, physical therapy, and chiropractic treatments.

 Tip to protect yourself:  Buy at least $35,000 worth of Personal Injury Protection (“PIP”) insurance to cover your medical bills.
